The U.S. is currently phasing out an older refrigerant called r410A and transitioning to newer, more environmentally friendly refrigerants like r454b and r32.
This is part of a federal effort to reduce the environmental impact of air conditioning systems by lowering greenhouse gas emissions. New regulations went into effect in January 2025, limiting the use of high-GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerants.
Manufacturers including Carrier and Mitsubishi have been introducing the new equipment only in the last month or so and AMHAC has already installed several r454b systems. New equipment has not been widely available for purchase despite the manufacturers having several years to release, which is causing nationwide inventory challenges.
- If your system usesr410A (most systems installed in the past 10–15 years):
- You can still use and service your system for the entire warranty period and beyond.
- R-410A is still available, but prices may rise over time, there is no ban.
- The new r454b and r32 refrigerant is not compatible with r410a, meaning if an outdoor unit requires replacement, the indoor refrigerant components (Air Handler or Coil, not furnaces) must also be replaced and vice versa.
- If you’re considering replacing your AC or heat pump:
- New systems will likely use the next-generation refrigerants starting this year but lead times are longer, so the sooner you discuss the better.
- These new refrigerants are better for the environment, but they require different components and tools, so older systems can’t be retrofitted.
- r410a systems are still available for the balance of 2025 and remain effective options.
- We’ll help guide you through the best options when the time comes.
- Don’t wait until your system breaks
- Inventory remains a challenge so if you are planning on replacing, we do recommend acting sooner rather than later as stocks vary daily for r410a and r454b and r32 products.
Myth | Fact |
---|---|
“My current system is now illegal.” | ✅ False — Your existing system is still legal and can be serviced. |
“I need to replace my AC right away.” | ✅ False — There’s no need to rush. We’ll advise you when it makes sense based on age and condition. |
“I won’t be able to find refrigerant anymore.” | ✅ False — r410A will be available for years, but prices may increase. |
“The new refrigerants are dangerous.” | ✅ False — They are safe and approved by the EPA, but they are mildly flammable, which just means installers need updated tools and training — which we have. |
